Though lauded for his innovations in glass, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) begin his artistic career as a painter and continued the practice throughout his life. This exhibition showcases his paintings and continuous exploration of color and light in the medium.
Tiffany trained under important and influential painters like Samuel Colman (1832–1930) and George Inness (1825–94) in America and Léon-Adolphe-Auguste Belly (1827–77) and Léon-Charles Adrien Bailly (b.1826) in Europe. Beginning in the 1860s, Tiffany exhibited his paintings in venues like the National Academy of Design in New York City.
Abundance, the c. 1888 watercolor and gouache on pink wove paper on exhibition in Beyond Glass was displayed at the National Academy of Design in 1889. This striking painting of a sow nursing her piglets is sure to be a favorite for many.
