View of the Old Market, Florence, with the Campanile Behind, 1878
Watercolor on paper Henry Roderick Newman, American, 1843–1917 Gift of Theodore E. and Susan Cragg Stebbins (2019-009:15)

This painting is a testament to Newman’s adoration of Italian architecture. Here, Newman has rendered one of the many views of his adopted home, Florence. While the market is the focus of the painting, the tops of the Campanile and Duomo project and are easily discerned in the distance. By incorporating two of the city’s most recognizable icons, Newman immediately conveyed the locale—but the landmarks also serve another purpose. Their inclusion adds depth to the composition and allowed Newman to exercise his love of architectural detail, delectating over the intricate, decorative elements of both structures.
